Porsche Club of America Zone 8
Las Vegas Region PCA

You must wear a PCA approved helmet for all Autocross, Drivers Education, High Performance Driving Schools, Time Trials and Club Racing events. Each event has it's own minimum standard. "SA" indicates that it is "Snell Approved" as an automotive helmet. SNELL Foundation Helmets are rated: SA2000 or SA2005 or SA2010, etc. The numbers "2000" or "2005" or "2010" indicates the helmet conforms to the standards of the year specified. The event will specify in the rules which year you must have as a minimum. The later the year, the safer the helmet. So look for the event you are registering for and read all the specific Event Rules for that particular event. To provide the best possible protection, a helmet should be replaced after approximately 5-8 years, as the materials used in their construction degrade with time regardless of the actual amount of use. Exposure to sunlight or extensive use may accelerate the process. If a helmet is subjected to even moderate impacts such as being dropped on the ground, then their protective capability may be compromised and are therefore no longer usable.

Motorcycle helmets, also known as "M" rated helmets are almost never allowed. "M" rated helmets are required to only be designed for a single impact, like falling on the ground, and their use thereafter is inadvisable. The biggest difference between automotive racing helmets and motorcycle helmets is that motorcycle helmets are not fire-resistant. That is why we require the use of "SA" rated Helmets and do not allow "M" rated helmets. If your helmet is not clearly marked with the required year on the inside of the helmet, it is not properly certified for that track event, and you will be turned away.

Although some events provide for rental of certified helmets at the track, you must check first with the Event Chairman for availability. We recommend that you make arrangements to purchase your own late model closed face helmet with flip-up visor. You should also consider getting a HANS "head and neck support" system at the same time for neck protection. One place in town has Snell Approved (SA) helmets in stock:
